KEY PLAYERS IN RESEARCH

The Trentino higher education and research system is characterised by a high level of specialisation in various disciplines, including the environment, management of natural resources and sustainable production, biotechnology, genomics, post-genomics and computational biology, neuroscience, cognitive science, materials science, information and communications technology, area governance and public policy research.

The key players are:

  • the University of Trento;
  • Fondazione Bruno Kessler;
  • Fondazione Edmund Mach;
  • the MUSE Science Museum;

with which the Provincial government has established a structured programme of priorities for strategic collaboration in the medium-long term.

University of Trento

During its 50 year history, the University of Trento (over 16,000 students, around 600 lecturers and researchers and an equal number of technical and administrative staff) has been accredited both for the quality and range of its research and training, but also for its commitment to international relations and as a driving force behind research and innovation, in constant contact with the local area. These characteristics have led the University of Trento to reach a high level in the rankings of national and international universities. The following centres operating in specific research sectors belong to the University of Trento.

  • C3A - Centro Agricoltura, Alimenti, Ambiente

The Agriculture, Food, Environment Center of San Michele all'Adige, made up of an agreement between the University of Trento and the Edmund Mach Foundation, is responsible for developing scientific collaborations in the sector starting from the degree course in Viticulture and Oenology.

It is a common working area for teachers and researchers working in the two partner institutions in the sectors of agriculture, food and the environment. The Center will allow to increase scientific production and joint participation in research projects, making critical mass and increasing also the chances of acquiring European resources.

CIBIO is a research centre where research is carried out in 4 areas representing the latest frontier in biomedical research: cancer biology & genomics, cell & molecular biology, microbiology & synthetic biology and neurobiology & development.

CIMeC is an interdepartmental centre of the University of Trento in Rovereto that deals with research, training, instrumentation and the dissemination of knowledge within the local community. Experts from Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, the USA, Canada, Argentina, Israel and numerous other countries work there. CIMeC was recently classified as the main Italian research unit on cognitive neuroscience. The researchers at CIMeC study the organisation of the brain through analysis of its functional, structural and psychological characteristics, in normal and pathological conditions.

The School of International Studies is a graduate school organising post-graduate teaching and specialist programmes, and is indeed the only graduate school in international studies existing in Italy. It is an integrated graduate school, as it coordinates a Master’s Degree in European and International Studies, a Master’s Degree in International Security Studies and a research doctorate course in International Studies.

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK)

Dedicated to international research for over forty years, the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) today has over 400 researchers and mostly focuses its research activities on the fields of information, materials and micro-systems technology, Italian-German studies and religious science. Thanks to a network of alliances and collaborative relations, it is also active in the field of theoretical nuclear physics, networks and telecommunications and social science.

Fondazione Edmund Mach

Now known as the Fondazione Edmund Mach, the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige has over 130 years of history in the field of research and further education in the agriculture, nutrition and environmental sectors. Thanks to its 5 departments and 200 researchers, it carries out studies and promotes cutting edge innovation in the agriculture, nutrition and environmental sectors, with the scope of promoting the sharing of new knowledge and contributing towards economic growth, social development and an overall improvement in the quality of life. In 2007 it decoded the vine genome, specifically Pinot Nero, for the first time, coordinating an international research consortium, to then sequence the apple genome in 2010 (Golden Delicious variety) and the woodland strawberry genome in 2011.

Museo delle Scienze MUSE

Inaugurated at the end of July 2013, the MUSE Science Museum – housed in a new building designed by the internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano – was welcomed by international and public sector professionals as a cutting edge development in the field, thanks to the innovative concept behind the museum. The research carried out at the MUSE focuses on biodiversity and ecology, earth and landscape science, with the objective of providing knowledge and instruments based on sustainable management and conservation of the environment.

Eit Digital

The aforementioned bodies are active alongside EIT Digital, as the Italian co-location centre in the European Institute of Technology’s European network of excellence operating in the field of information and communications technology, and the recently established HIT- Hub Innovazione Trentino -  the consortium set up by Trentino Sviluppo, the University of Trento and the Kessler and Mach Foundations to encourage the transfer of technology, innovation and the development of new entrepreneurialism in research.
