The Trentino higher education and research system is characterised by a high level of specialisation in various disciplines, including the environment, management of natural resources and sustainable production, biotechnology, genomics, post-genomics and computational biology, neuroscience, cognitive science, materials science, information and communications technology, area governance and public policy research.

with which the Provincial government has established a structured programme of priorities for strategic collaboration in the medium-long term.

University of Trento

During its 50 year history, the University of Trento (over 16,000 students, around 600 lecturers and researchers and an equal number of technical and administrative staff) has been accredited both for the quality and range of its research and training, but also for its commitment to international relations and as a driving force behind research and innovation, in constant contact with the local area. These characteristics have led the University of Trento to reach a high level in the rankings of national and international universities. The following centres operating in specific research sectors belong to the University of Trento.

  • C3A - Centro Agricoltura, Alimenti, Ambiente 

The Agriculture, Food, Environment Center of San Michele all'Adige, made up of an agreement between the University of Trento and the Edmund Mach Foundation, is responsible for developing scientific collaborations in the sector starting from the degree course in Viticulture and Oenology.

It is a common working area for teachers and researchers working in the two partner institutions in the sectors of agriculture, food and the environment. The Center will allow to increase scientific production and joint participation in research projects, making critical mass and increasing also the chances of acquiring European resources.

CIBIO is a research centre where research is carried out in 4 areas representing the latest frontier in biomedical research: cancer biology & genomics, cell & molecular biology, microbiology & synthetic biology and neurobiology & development.

CIMeC is an interdepartmental centre of the University of Trento in Rovereto that deals with research, training, instrumentation and the dissemination of knowledge within the local community. Experts from Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, the USA, Canada, Argentina, Israel and numerous other countries work there. CIMeC was recently classified as the main Italian research unit on cognitive neuroscience. The researchers at CIMeC study the organisation of the brain through analysis of its functional, structural and psychological characteristics, in normal and pathological conditions.

The School of International Studies is a graduate school organising post-graduate teaching and specialist programmes, and is indeed the only graduate school in international studies existing in Italy. It is an integrated graduate school, as it coordinates a Master’s Degree in European and International Studies, a Master’s Degree in International Security Studies and a research doctorate course in International Studies.

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK)

Dedicated to international research for over forty years, the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) today has over 400 researchers and mostly focuses its research activities on the fields of information, materials and micro-systems technology, Italian-German studies and religious science. Thanks to a network of alliances and collaborative relations, it is also active in the field of theoretical nuclear physics, networks and telecommunications and social science.

Fondazione Edmund Mach

Now known as the Fondazione Edmund Mach, the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige has over 130 years of history in the field of research and further education in the agriculture, nutrition and environmental sectors. Thanks to its 5 departments and 200 researchers, it carries out studies and promotes cutting edge innovation in the agriculture, nutrition and environmental sectors, with the scope of promoting the sharing of new knowledge and contributing towards economic growth, social development and an overall improvement in the quality of life. In 2007 it decoded the vine genome, specifically Pinot Nero, for the first time, coordinating an international research consortium, to then sequence the apple genome in 2010 (Golden Delicious variety) and the woodland strawberry genome in 2011.

Museo delle Scienze MUSE 

Inaugurated at the end of July 2013, the MUSE Science Museum – housed in a new building designed by the internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano – was welcomed by international and public sector professionals as a cutting edge development in the field, thanks to the innovative concept behind the museum. The research carried out at the MUSE focuses on biodiversity and ecology, earth and landscape science, with the objective of providing knowledge and instruments based on sustainable management and conservation of the environment.

Eit Digital

The aforementioned bodies are active alongside EIT Digital, as the Italian co-location centre in the European Institute of Technology’s European network of excellence operating in the field of information and communications technology, and the recently established HIT- Hub Innovazione Trentino -  the consortium set up by Trentino Sviluppo, the University of Trento and the Kessler and Mach Foundations to encourage the transfer of technology, innovation and the development of new entrepreneurialism in research.

Founded in 2005 COSBI is a Center owned by 50% for Microsoft research and 50% for the University of Trento. He is involved in research for food and pharmaceutical companies in the areas of biomarkers, microbiota, modeling and multilevel simulation through systems based on computational biology.


Center for Research and Telecommunication Experimentation for NETworked communicaties

CREATE-NET is an international research center based in Trento that holds a leading position in Europe in the field of ICT and telecommunications technologies.


Istituto Europeo di Ricerca sull'Impresa Cooperativa e Sociale
Through theoretical and applied research, training and consultancy activities carried out with the involvement of the scientific community and sector operators, Euricse promotes knowledge and innovation in the field of cooperative and social enterprises and other non-profit organizations of a productive nature. The Institute intends to deepen the role of these subjects and their impact on economic and social development, accompanying their growth and improving their effectiveness.



The HUB mission is to promote and enhance the results of research and innovation of the Trentino system in order to promote the development of the local economy. Its purpose is to catalyze innovation, technology transfer and scouting of innovation opportunities for Members and, indirectly, for the territory of the Autonomous Province of Trento, at national, European and international levels.


Trento Institute for Fundamental Physics and Applications

TIFPA is a new national center of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and is dedicated to the research into elementary particle physics, to the development of cutting-edge technologies in the fields of sensors, space research, supercomputing and nuclear biomedicine. TIFPA is the result of a collaboration between the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, the University of Trento, the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK) and the Provincial Agency of Trento for Proton Therapy.



 Istituto per la Valorizzazione del Legno e delle Specie Arboree
The Institute for the Valorization of Wood and of the Arboreal Species of the National Research Council was established in September 2002 and is the largest Italian research institute in the forest-wood sector. IVALSA is a place of scientific and technical comparison, the natural reference for the wood industry and for those who work in wood as a specialist, researcher, designer and entrepreneur.


India-Trento Program for Advanced Research
ITPAR is recognized in the Cooperation Program (POC) between the Italian Republic and the Republic of India as one of the most important bilateral initiatives and, as such, has access to funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ITPAR program is part of the Agreement signed in July 2003 between the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Indian government, the Autonomous Province of Trento (through the Bruno Kessler Foundation) and the University of Trento.


Laboratorio Ontologia Applicata

LOA performs basic and applied research in the fields of knowledge engineering, database design, information retrieval, natural language and semantic web. The research group is characterized by a strong interdisciplinary approach that combines computer science, philosophy and linguistics.


Unità di Ricerca per il Monitoraggio e la Pianificazione Forestale

The Research Unit for Forest Monitoring and Planning (CRA-MPF) inherits the heritage and scientific tradition of the Experimental Institute for Forest Management and Forestry (ISAFA). He deals with forest planning and management, inventorying and monitoring, mountain agriculture and medicinal plants, biometrics and forest modeling, forestry geomatics.


Centre for Advanced Computer Graphics Technologies

GraphiTech carries out applied research and development in the large technological areas of computer graphics and large-scale visualization systems for geographical data.


LEED Trento Centre

The OECD LEED Center carries out its activities in the area of ​​improving public policies implemented at local level, promoting innovation in economic development, developing capacities in the design, implementation and evaluation of economic development strategies and encouraging the transfer of knowledge and the exchange of experiences between OCSE economies and non-member Countries.



EIT Digital is the organization that directs digital transformation in Europe through digital innovation and entrepreneurial training. Digital EIT offers innovative digital innovations for the market and generates entrepreneurial talent for economic growth and improving the quality of life in Europe. It does so by mobilizing a pan-European ecosystem of over 130 top European companies, small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups, universities and research institutes.
