RESEARCH IN THE INDUSTRIAL SECTOR

The main actors of the Autonomous Province of Trento involved in the Industrial Research sector are:

The Agency (APIAE)

The Provincial Agency for the promotion of economic activities (APIAE)  was established by the provincial law No 2/2009 to make more effective the mix of grants and of financial incentives and facilities for business and other stakeholders operating in all economic sectors (except agriculture).

Polo Meccatronica

A network of companies, research centres and educational institutions.

Polo Meccatronica is a network of companies, public and private research centres and educational institutions contributing to the social and economic development and the technology transfer of the entire Trentino production system. Within Polo Meccatronica these different actors can dialogue and collaborate, driving forward mechatronic engineering that combines IT, electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and sensors and translate the experimentation of new technologies into the development of concrete solutions and industrial applications.

The cohabitation of start-ups, colleges, university departments, research centres, and industrial accelerators, supported by high value-added services offered by Trentino Sviluppo, creates ideal conditions for the testing and the production of innovative processes and products.

Polo Meccatronica is the latest development which reflects Trentino’s natural inclination towards mechanics and mechatronics. Indeed, this is the sector that employs the highest number of employees in the Trentino manufacturing industry (almost 10,000), counting about 800 active companies and providing an important contribution to the region’s export.

Working in a hub, companies, research centres and educational institutions develop their respective roles and together fulfil the need for local innovation.

The industrial and technical-scientific project of Mechatronics is coordinated by a mixed public-private task-force and interdisciplinary skills.

Industrial research is also carried out in the research departments of large companies established in Trentino, like for instance:

BonfiglioliMechatronic research  http://www.bonfiglioli.it/en
Bonfiglioli is an Italian global leader in mechatronics, power and motion transmission, and renewable energy settles. The activities of Bonfiglioli’s Mechatronic Research Division (BMR) of Rovereto (Trento) is mainly focused to develop a new generation of efficient brushless motors, precision gearboxes, sensors and control devices. BMR has given a strong push to R&D with the production of cutting-edge and high performing optimized solutions.

Incentives for research applied for companies

The main provincial instrument for incentives for the promotion of economy and new entrepreneurship is Law 6/99 (the so called “Legge 6”).

Law 6/99 contains the modalities for companies to receive subsidies and incentives to do applied research (i.e. industrial research and precompetitive development activities)..

Who is eligible?

Large and small enterprises, whose operating units are located in the province of Trento, can have access to incentives and funds granted within Law 6/99. The applications are evaluated by the provincial Technical-Scientific Committee for Research and Innovation (CRI).

However, only large companies can obtain incentives for feasibility studies that precede industrial research and pre-competitive development activities.
Projects are evaluted by the novelty and originality of the acquired knowledge, their usefulness in order to increase competitiveness and development, the guarantee that the results of the research are used by the company on the provincial territory. The facilitations may be granted, subject to the opinion of the Technical-Scientific Committee, also for projects where the results might not be used by the company on the provincial territory, provided that they present characteristics of absolute excellence from the scientific and technological point of view. Further requirements are required for large companies.

Research centers of large companies that only perform research activities are entitled to the funds by law 6/99, if they make an investment in the province of Trento for the same amount of received funding within five years from the date of conclusion of the funded research project. A company that has no registered office on the provincial territory can also benefit from the contribution, provided that the research project is carried out in collaboration with one of the research organization located in the province of Trento or with the University of Trento.

The eligible costs for funding are those for feasibility studies, for research projects (including technical amortization, staff costs, advisory services, additional overheads as a result of research activity) and those for research commissioned to third parties.

Finally, it should be noted that the PAT promotes the temporary secondament (not exceeding one year) at local companies of researchers and technicians of research institutes operating in the provincial area. This collaboration has the twofold objective of allowing the professional training of the researcher and the acquisition of technical assistance to the company.
